The ideal path for weightloss includes a diet where your are reducing your usual daily caloric intake by 500 calories. With diet alone, one could lose a pound of fat a week just by removing a mere 500 excess calories. So instead of drinking 2 soft drinks a day and a cookie after lunch, have water instead and skip dessert.
Now, couple this idea with smaller portions of lean protein and complex carbohydrates and more frequent meals so as to prevent hunger pangs. This will keep the metabolism high in order to maximize the body's calorie burning potential.
